Using Eltron’s On-site Printer, Symbology Enterprises Provides Police with Easy kIDcard™ Program

When executives from Symbology Enterprises went to the Warren Township (NJ) annual fair and saw how difficult is was for the police department to ID children with an old laminating system, they had an idea. Using the same on-site card printers that Symbology Enterprises sold to companies for ID cards, they could create a complete package for law enforcement and others who want to undertake ID programs and make the process much simpler.

Since then, police departments throughout New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Florida, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia use their kIDcard Program. These agencies simply produce a digital picture, digital fingerprint, add in the vital statistics and print it all out on a PVC card, similar to those used by employers in offices. The child’s information is stored in a database for easy access so law enforcement can rapidly respond to incidents. Reports are similar to those used by Amber Alert.

“In the event that a child is lost or missing, the parents have a document containing all of the child’s information so that they can immediately provide law enforcement officials with key facts needed to start a search,” emphasizes Shaun McInerney, director of sales for Symbology Enterprises. “Once notified, law enforcement can email the information to the appropriate agencies where posters and flyers can be issued in minutes. If necessary, the card also provides documentation of the child’s right thumbprint.”

According to McInerney, once other police departments saw the kIDcard Program used by the Warren Police Department, they were interested in having their own. The equipment is easy to use, portable and can be moved from location to location, such as from school to school. “Most police departments need only one printer,” McInerney reports. “They are primarily used by D.A.R.E., Community Policing and S.R.O. units. Many departments have adopted other uses for the system such as printing police, township employee and retirement home resident ID’s. Basically, if identification is needed, the system can produce the card. Optionally, the department can keep a complete database of all those who have been ID’d. In addition, school systems are finding great benefit from the kIDcard Program. Such programs promote community awareness and add a level of security to the community.”

The standalone P420 dual-sided color printer prints sharp, readable ID photographs, graphics, and text edge-to-edge in seconds. The enclosure includes a viewing window to monitor the printing process without opening the unit. The P420 printer ribbon synchronizes automatically, eliminating the need for operator intervention.
