2D Barcodes: QR Codes Are Taking Over!

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 2:47:16 PM America/New_York

SEI QR Code

Most of us have all seen them and all know what they do. For those who are new to QR codes, here is a brief explanation:

QR code stands for quick response code. These codes can be scanned with your smartphone, through an app, or a barcode scanner. They have a high speed scan which is where the term “quick response” comes from. Once you see one of these codes, you scan and there you have it! Whatever information is encoded in the QR code comes right up; a website, a coupon and many other possibilities can come from a simple scan.

QR codes are all over the place. They’re being used for all sorts of things. QR codes are being used in unique and fascinating ways. There are temporary children tattoos that include the child’s information and who to contact in case they get lost, restaurants are posting them in their windows for a quick easy download of their menu, used car salesmen are putting them in ads to get fast information on the type of car you are looking for, real estate agents place codes on their for sale signs or posts to give information on homes, software updates can be downloaded through a simple QR code as well, etc.

QR codes are being used by small businesses on their business cards, labels, ads, and signs. A new trend is businesses incorporating QR codes in their logos. A logo is important when marketing a product or a service; they are recognizable with only a glance at times. Introducing QR codes into logos is a great idea because wherever your logo is it can be scanned for information.

Symbology Enterprises, Inc. can help incorporate your QR codes on business cards and labels. We have high quality and durable supplies to help market your businesses using 2D barcodes. Give us a call today to get informed on how we can help as well as assist you with any barcode scanning and label needs you may have.

Barcodes and Their Importance in the Medical Field

Thursday, December 22, 2011 2:17:56 PM America/New_York

During the past ten years barcode labeling has come very far in the medical field and patient safety.

In 2004, the FDA required all prescription drugs, biological products, and over-the-counter drugs be bar coded for scanning and tracking purposes. The goal of this regulation is to eliminate errors in medication. An early Institute of Medicine study showed there were 44,000-98,000 deaths caused by medical errors annually in America and 7,000 of those deaths were medication related. Most errors are results of improper dosage amounts or the incorrect drug is administered to the patient. Not only are problems medication related but laboratory related as well. Delayed diagnosis, additional laboratory testing, treatment of the wrong patient for the wrong disease, and severe transfusion reactions can all be results of wrongly identified specimens. Bar codes in the medical field will help reduce these types of common yet avoidable errors.

The FDA estimated that 50% of all medication errors will be cut with the use of barcode labels. Barcode scanners have 1 error in every 10 million characters while manual keyboard entries have 1 error in every 100 characters.

Bar coding makes it easier to identify supplies, kits, equipment, and other assets, so material management systems can be updated with a simple scan. Also, as samples are being drawn labeling them right away has been proven to decrease errors. Bar codes can help reduce time required to collect data while ensuring accurate information.

To meet the needs of the pharmacy, barcodes need to be sizeable, durable, and legible. Symbology Enterprises offers labels that can meet all these needs as well as a wide range of thermal printers that print high quality barcodes for prescriptions, bottles, vials, IV bags and unit-dose packaging.

Intermec Labels: Duratran vs. Duratherm

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 12:26:34 PM America/New_York

Here is a little information on the differences between Intermec’s Duratherm labels and Duratran labels to help assist you when purchasing your desired labels.

Intermec Duratherm direct thermal paper labels are treated with a heat sensitive layer and imaged through direct contact with the print head. No ribbon, toner, or ink is required with Duratherm labels. Though, direct thermal media is more sensitive to light, heat and abrasion, which reduces the life of the printed material; Duratherm labels with a top coat provide enhanced durability for applications where catalysts such as these are a concern. Direct thermal labels are great for shipping labels, patient and visitor identification, receipts, and ticket printing.

Intermec Duratran thermal transfer labels are available in both paper and synthetic stock. Synthetic or “film” labels meet the needs of more challenging environmental applications, with qualities including tear resistance, aggressive adhesives, moisture and heat resistance. These labels are ideal for long-term applications. They are best used for product identification; circuit board tracking; permanent identification; sample and file tracking; asset tagging; inventory identification; certification labels such as UL/CSA; laboratory specimens; cold storage and freezers; and outdoor applications.

When paired with compatible labels and tags, Intermec’s thermal transfer ribbons produce sharp text and bar codes on a broad range of materials, both papers and films, with excellent durability.
